No Ordinary Harvest (SD Union Tribune June 14, 2009)
The Carlsbad Aquafarm, which shares the outer portion of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon with the Encina Power Plant, grows mussels, oysters and abalone for restaurants nationwide. The Aquafarm also raises and sells seahorses to aquariums and wholesalers for resale to hobbyists.

Stinking Lagoon is a Haven (SD Union Tribune June 6, 2009)
The Agua Hedionda Lagoon is the most active of the North County’s lagoons and is home to a variety of recreational activities such as kayaking, wakeboarding, jet-skiing and fishing, as well as the Encina Powerplant, a fish hatchery, a YMCA aquatics park and strawberry fields. The lagoon is also a critical resting stop on the Pacific Flyway for a wide variety of migratory birds. The lagoon was christened “stinky waters” by Spanish explorers in the 1700’s who thought the lagoon had an odor, However today the lagoon is odor free and flourishing.

Nature Centers Teach About Avian Migration (SD Union Tribune May 10, 2009)
The International Migratory Bird Festival hosted by the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Discovery Center on May 9th was a day to celebrate and learn about the migratory birds who visit the lagoon during their annual journeys. The Discovery Center is home to one of the largest swallow colonies in North County and offers environmental outreach programs and seasonalnature festivals geared to both children and adults. The Center also hosts the largest California native plant garden in North County.

Coastal Lagoons Celebrate Migratory Bird Festival (North County Times May 4, 2009)
The three coastal Carlsbad lagoons will join together on May 9th to celebrate International Migratory Bird Day with a variety of activities, including nature hikes, children’s crafts, live birds, and entertainment. The purpose of the Migratory Bird Festival is to educate the public about the many problem migrating birds encounter on their annual journeys, includingloss of habitat, climate change and power lines, among others.
